Stump grinding and stump removal in West End, Nashville

West End has historic early-1900s homes near Vanderbilt alongside apartments and condos, on small to medium landscaped lots. Huge old oaks and magnolias are a big part of the area. The Vanderbilt campus is famous for its trees, and the old-growth trees on the historic properties around it leave big stumps when they finally come down.

This page is part of our stump grinding service across Nashville, TN; new to it? Read how stump grinding works. Need the stump fully dug out for a patio, pool or addition? See stump removal in Nashville. Roots running across the lawn? See root removal. Live nearby but not sure you’re covered? We work across the Nashville area, including homes near county lines.

Old-growth trees on historic properties

When an old oak comes down beside a historic home, the stump is often close to an old foundation, a walk or a garden wall, and the roots can run well past it. That calls for careful, compact work. Send a photo that shows what’s around the stump along with its width at ground level.

Magnolias and storm damage

Storms are the other big source of West End stump calls. If you plan to put something new in the same spot, ask for deeper grinding and the chips hauled away. See also root removal.

Condos, apartments and nearby Midtown

Property managers and HOAs for West End apartments and condos can request quotes too, as can owners on the older blocks of nearby Midtown and Music Row, where historic homes now serve as offices and mature trees line the streets. Mention parking, loading access and any courtyard or gate the machine has to pass through.

Before you send us a quote request

  • Measure the stump across the widest point at ground level.
  • Count the stumps. Extra stumps on the same visit usually cost less each.
  • Check access. Measure your narrowest gate and note slopes, fences or decks near the stump.
  • Mark private lines. Sprinklers, invisible dog fences, lighting and septic lines are not marked by 811, so point them out to us.
  • Decide on cleanup. Chips left as mulch, or hauled away and backfilled with topsoil.

What it costs

Price mostly depends on stump width, then on the number of stumps, access and cleanup. Most jobs run about $120 to $400 per stump, with a per-visit minimum: a small stump is at the low end and a big one is at the high end. Send us a photo and we’ll give you a firm quote. The Nashville cost guide explains each factor.

How much does stump grinding cost in West End?

Price mostly depends on stump width: a small stump is at the low end and a big one is at the high end. Most jobs run about $120 to $400 per stump, with a per-visit minimum; how many stumps there are, access and cleanup matter too. Send us a photo and we’ll give you a firm quote.

Is stump grinding the same as stump removal?

Not exactly, though people often use the two names for the same job. Stump grinding uses a machine with a spinning cutting wheel to chew the stump down below the soil line; the roots stay in the ground and break down over time. Full stump removal digs out the stump and its main root ball, which leaves a bigger hole to backfill and usually costs more. If you want a stump gone from a lawn or garden bed, grinding is usually all you need. Full removal makes sense when a foundation, patio, pool or regrade is going in right where the stump sits.

What happens to the wood chips?

Grinding turns the stump into a pile of chips and soil. We usually leave it in the hole or nearby for you to use as mulch. Hauling it away and backfilling with topsoil is usually an extra charge, so just ask and we’ll include it in your quote.

Does someone need to call 811 before grinding?

Usually, yes. Tennessee 811 says anyone excavating with machinery needs their own locate request, made at least three working days ahead; the service is free. Before any grinding, Tennessee 811 is called to mark public lines. Private lines such as sprinklers, invisible dog fences, landscape lighting and septic lines are not marked by 811, so point those out.

Is the quote free?

Yes. The quote is free and there is no obligation. Send us a photo of the stump, its width at ground level and your narrowest gate, and we’ll give you a firm quote.
