Stump grinding and stump removal in The Nations, Nashville
The Nations is one of the fastest-evolving parts of Nashville. Its 1940s-to-’60s cottages and ranches are being replaced by new builds block by block, and lot clearing for that construction is the main stump job here. The yards are small to medium and flat, and many still have older oaks and maples.

Clearing lots for new builds
Teardown infill clearing is constant in The Nations. If you’re a builder or an owner getting a lot ready, give us a stump count, rough sizes and which spots will be under the house, driveway or footings. Those need full removal, while lawn areas only need grinding. Several stumps on one visit usually cost less each.
Older oaks and maples
In the original yards, older oaks and maples that die out or come down in storms leave wide stumps. Measure at ground level, and if you plan to replant in the same spot, ask for deeper grinding and the chips hauled away.
Flat lots, tight neighbors
Flat ground makes access easier, but new houses tend to sit close together. Mention the gap between houses or the gate width so the right size machine shows up.

- Check access. Measure your narrowest gate and note slopes, fences or decks near the stump.
- Mark private lines. Sprinklers, invisible dog fences, lighting and septic lines are not marked by 811, so point them out to us.
- Decide on cleanup. Chips left as mulch, or hauled away and backfilled with topsoil.

How much does stump grinding cost in The Nations?
Price mostly depends on stump width: a small stump is at the low end and a big one is at the high end. Most jobs run about $120 to $400 per stump, with a per-visit minimum; how many stumps there are, access and cleanup matter too. Send us a photo and we’ll give you a firm quote.
Is stump grinding the same as stump removal?
Not exactly, though people often use the two names for the same job. Stump grinding uses a machine with a spinning cutting wheel to chew the stump down below the soil line; the roots stay in the ground and break down over time. Full stump removal digs out the stump and its main root ball, which leaves a bigger hole to backfill and usually costs more. If you want a stump gone from a lawn or garden bed, grinding is usually all you need. Full removal makes sense when a foundation, patio, pool or regrade is going in right where the stump sits.
What happens to the wood chips?
Grinding turns the stump into a pile of chips and soil. We usually leave it in the hole or nearby for you to use as mulch. Hauling it away and backfilling with topsoil is usually an extra charge, so just ask and we’ll include it in your quote.
Does someone need to call 811 before grinding?
Usually, yes. Tennessee 811 says anyone excavating with machinery needs their own locate request, made at least three working days ahead; the service is free. Before any grinding, Tennessee 811 is called to mark public lines. Private lines such as sprinklers, invisible dog fences, landscape lighting and septic lines are not marked by 811, so point those out.
Is the quote free?
Yes. The quote is free and there is no obligation. Send us a photo of the stump, its width at ground level and your narrowest gate, and we’ll give you a firm quote.
